ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. The environmental transition clock has been running for five months, and two stages have already passed.
If your last ISO 14001 training covered the 2015 edition, your certificate describes a superseded standard. Here is what that means for auditors, consultants, implementers and environmental managers.
Two things sit behind a transition course
A transition course sits across two separate Exemplar Global processes. The 2015 Environmental Management unit was EM; the 2026 edition brings EM26 and an EM26 Transition competency.
- Course performance criteria. The training provider builds the course to the current EM26 and EM26 Transition requirements.
- Personnel certification. Exemplar Global separately certifies individuals. If you hold personnel certification, the transition carries your scope across; otherwise the course evidences current competence to employers, clients and certification bodies.
If you hold personnel certification: your dates

These dates are calculated by applying Exemplar Global Transition Process Overview timeframes to the ISO 14001:2026 publication date of 15 April 2026. They are explanatory dates, not separate ISO 14001 deadlines issued by Exemplar Global.
- 15 April 2026, passed: certification continues under the 2015 edition.
- By 15 July 2026, passed: transition requirements are announced; 2015 applications continue for twelve months.
- 15 April 2027: recognition shifts to the 2026 edition.
- By 15 April 2029: transition must be complete.
- After 15 April 2029: the 2015 edition is retired; full training and re-application are required.
Transition training is a requirement for anyone holding 2015-edition training. The personal deadline is two weeks before the 30 April 2029 deadline for organizations.
Your training certificate has a shelf life of its own
Recognition of training, the edition covered, and personnel recertification are three separate clocks. A recent certificate can still describe the superseded 2015 edition. Transitioning the edition does not reset recertification, and recertification does not transition the edition.
If you do not hold personnel certification
Your competence still has to be current. Clients, principal contractors, tender panels and certification bodies all ask who is competent.
- Training from an Exemplar Global approved provider, built to current Environmental Management criteria.
- A certificate carrying the Exemplar Global logo.
- A certificate naming the edition and competency units.
- Your own record of applying it in audits, registers and EMS documentation.
What a 2026 course has to cover
The changes reach into lifecycle perspective, climate change, biodiversity, resource efficiency, leadership, emergency situations, defined audit objectives and externally provided processes. A transition course should turn those changes into audit questions, register entries and management review conversations.
Ask which competency the course delivers
Transition courses are not all the same size.
- The EM26 Transition competency on its own. A short update covering what changed.
- The full EM26 competency with the EM26 Transition competency. This updates underlying environmental management competence.
- If you are starting fresh, a full specialist course covers the 2026 edition from the ground up.
Ask: which competency units will appear on my certificate?

The pressure arrives well before 2029
The environmental timetable runs ahead of the quality one. Certification bodies had to lodge transition declarations by 31 January 2027, with accreditation decisions complete by 30 April 2027. Auditors, environmental managers and consultants are being asked about competence during 2026 and 2027.
If you hold more than one credential
The quality timetable runs five months behind this one. Review ISO 9001:2026 training separately when relevant; we will add the related competency-article link once it is published.
The question behind the deadline
Being current and being competent are different things. The 2026 edition asks about lifecycle impacts, biodiversity and influence over a value chain; those cannot be audited from a folder or implemented with a template.
While booking training, ask yourself what has changed in your work because of what you learned last time.

- Check which edition your certificate names.
- Check your personnel-certification renewal date.
- Read the scope clause first; lifecycle perspective shapes the aspects register.
- Check transition requirements against your scope.
- Book transition training before 15 April 2027.
- Plan environmental and quality transition training together.
