ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. The environmental transition clock has been running for five months, and two stages have already passed.
If your last ISO 14001 training covered the 2015 edition, your certificate describes a superseded standard. Here is what that means for auditors, consultants, implementers and environmental managers.
A transition course sits across two separate Exemplar Global processes. The 2015 Environmental Management unit was EM; the 2026 edition brings EM26 and an EM26 Transition competency.
These dates are calculated by applying Exemplar Global Transition Process Overview timeframes to the ISO 14001:2026 publication date of 15 April 2026. They are explanatory dates, not separate ISO 14001 deadlines issued by Exemplar Global.
Transition training is a requirement for anyone holding 2015-edition training. The personal deadline is two weeks before the 30 April 2029 deadline for organizations.
Recognition of training, the edition covered, and personnel recertification are three separate clocks. A recent certificate can still describe the superseded 2015 edition. Transitioning the edition does not reset recertification, and recertification does not transition the edition.
Your competence still has to be current. Clients, principal contractors, tender panels and certification bodies all ask who is competent.
The changes reach into lifecycle perspective, climate change, biodiversity, resource efficiency, leadership, emergency situations, defined audit objectives and externally provided processes. A transition course should turn those changes into audit questions, register entries and management review conversations.
Transition courses are not all the same size.
Ask: which competency units will appear on my certificate?
The environmental timetable runs ahead of the quality one. Certification bodies had to lodge transition declarations by 31 January 2027, with accreditation decisions complete by 30 April 2027. Auditors, environmental managers and consultants are being asked about competence during 2026 and 2027.
The quality timetable runs five months behind this one. Review ISO 9001:2026 training separately when relevant; we will add the related competency-article link once it is published.
Being current and being competent are different things. The 2026 edition asks about lifecycle impacts, biodiversity and influence over a value chain; those cannot be audited from a folder or implemented with a template.
While booking training, ask yourself what has changed in your work because of what you learned last time.
